Choosing Roofing Materials for an East Grand Rapids Home

Last reviewed: August 5, 2026

There is no universal best roof material for an East Grand Rapids home. Architectural asphalt shingles usually offer the simplest balance of initial cost, familiar installation and localized repair. Designer shingles emphasize a heavier or more distinctive appearance. Standing seam metal changes the detailing, installer requirements and initial budget, but may suit homeowners prioritizing a particular look and long-term ownership.

Material Good fit when Questions to settle
Architectural asphalt You want broad product and installer availability with straightforward spot repair Exact product, nailing, underlayment, ventilation and warranty eligibility
Designer asphalt Roof appearance is a major part of the façade and the added material/detail cost fits the project Weight, matching availability, hip/ridge components and whether the visual difference is meaningful from the street
Standing seam metal You value the panel profile and are prepared for specialized fabrication and flashing Panel gauge, coating, seam type, substrate, snow movement, penetrations and installer experience

Repairability and matching

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association explains that asphalt-roof components can often be repaired independently, although an exact color match becomes harder as a roof ages. Metal-panel repair can be more involved because long panels, concealed clips and custom flashing work as a system. Ask how future penetrations or a damaged panel would be handled.

Technical reference: ARMA, Asphalt Shingle Roofs Are Repairable. Manufacturer and industry sources describe their own products; compare those claims with the written proposal and warranty.

Michigan weather does not pick the product for you

Snow, ice, wind, sun and repeated freeze-thaw cycles make installation details important across material types. Underlayment, ice-barrier placement, flashing, fastening and ventilation are system decisions. A premium covering cannot compensate for weak deck preparation or incorrect details.

Use relative cost carefully

Roof EGR’s current sample configuration places architectural shingles at the lowest base rate, designer shingles above them, and standing seam metal highest. Those are estimator assumptions—not a survey of local bids. Complex flashing, tear-off and deck work can narrow or widen the difference on a real project.

Compare on your own roof

Measure the roof and switch materials using the same geometry. Then compare complete written systems, not just a per-square price.
